What is Microsoft Authenticator for?
Microsoft Authenticator provides an important additional layer of protection on your college accounts. It ensures that only you can access your account.
The initial set up is required for all college accounts. After you create your college login, you will be prompted by a pop-up which says 'keep your account secure'.
Before you start
To set up Microsoft Authenticator, you’ll need two devices:
1. A mobile device (like your phone or tablet) to download the authentication app.
2. A second device (such as a PC or tablet) to complete the setup process.
You can set up either of these two methods:
1. To use the app (recommended)
2. To get phone call notifications.
If you can’t download the app, please follow these steps instead.

STEP 1: DOWNLOAD THE
Download the 'Microsoft Authenticator' app to your mobile device. Search for it on App Store or Play Store, or use the QR code (below) for the app download link:

STEP 2: THE SECURITY SETUP
PROMPT ON YOUR PC
On your computer, go to: Welcome Portal and sign in with your college email address and password:
Username: StudentNumber@student.stcg.ac.uk
Password: Normal college password
You should then be prompted to Keep your account secure. Click Next until a QR code appears on the screen.
Now move on to Step 3, keeping that QR code on the computer screen.

STEP 3: ADD YOUR ACCOUNT

On your phone, open the Microsoft Authenticator app.

Select Scan a QR code. Important: DO NOT select 'Sign in with Microsoft'.

Use your phone to scan the QR code that's showing on your computer screen.
Important: use the QR code scanner provided by the Authenticator app.
This will link your College account to the Authenticator app.


Important: DO NOT select 'Sign in with Microsoft'.
STEP 4: FINALISE SET UP
(don't skip this step)
1. On your computer, click Next. You will be given a number.
2. On your phone, a notification from the Microsoft Authenticator app will pop up. In the pop-up box on your phone, enter the number shown on your computer and tap Yes to approve the sign-in.
3. Back on your computer, click Next, then click Done.
