Top Tips for Using Moodle

Updated: Dec 7, 2022

Find out some tips that you can use when using Moodle.

Find out how to:

Search inside your course. Struggling to find content on your Moodle course?

Use the search feature to filter down your course's contents. Look for assignments, briefs and class materials.

All you need to do is open up your course on Moodle. On the left-hand side is your course contents, click on the magnify glass icon and search for a topic, assignment or unit. This is a perfect way to filter through your course and easily locate information.

You could use this when looking for where to submit your work or if you want to find resources for a particular topic.

Update your Moodle Profile. Another great tip in Moodle is updating your profile. In your 'My Courses' Page under your name click on 'Profile'. This is where you can add a profile picture to your account!

On your profile page you will see information on the course you are enrolled on and your username. Under the field named 'User Details' select the option 'Edit Profile'

You can then drag and drop your file or select the file icon with a green tick. Choose your photo and select 'Save Changes'

Manage Messages. Did you know teachers and students can send and receive messages on Moodle?

You can message your tutor and other peers in your class.

Although - it's important to manage your privacy settings.

To do this, go to your 'My Courses' page and to the right of your profile, click on the message's icon.

In the search box, this is where you can type in the name of the person that you'd like to contact - this person must be part of South Thames Colleges Group. Next to the search bar click on the settings icon. Under privacy select 'My Contacts Only'.

Please note: your tutor will be able to contact you regardless of your privacy settings.

Find Your Course Easily. If you are enrolled on a few courses this tip is perfect for you!

Quickly access your course by adding courses to your favourites and pinning them to the top of your 'my courses' page.

To do this, go to your My Courses page and choose a course you use most frequently.

Click on the star in the top right-hand corner of the course display image and that will favourite your course and move it to the top of your courses, making it easier for you to find each time you login!

Open LMS App: You can access Moodle whenever and wherever you are. You can also access Moodle on your phone.

The mobile app is called 'Open LMS' and is not to be confused with the Moodle app.
