If you are using information that has been created by an AI tool like Chat GPT then you need to make sure that you reference it to avoid plagiarism. This type of information has only been widely available recently so the advice on referencing might change in the future.
Currently the best approach is to follow the Harvard referencing rules for a personal communication (email, text message or similar).
Harvard Referencing is the commonly used referencing system at Carshalton, Kingston, Merton and South Thames colleges, however it is best to check this with the teacher/tutor who set your assignment.
General guidance for students about how to use Harvard Referencing is available on MyCollegeZone: Harvard Referencing
How to Reference AI Generated content using Harvard Referencing
Follow the Harvard referencing rules for a personal communication (email, text message or similar).
In the list of references at the end of your work you need to follow this pattern:
Name of generative AI authoring tool (Year) Name of AI authoring tool response to Name of person entering query, day and month content was generated.
For example:
Open AI Chat GPT (2023) Chat GPT response to Alan Green, 14 November
The in-text reference or citation (the bit that goes after the quote or the information that you have used) will be:
(Name of generative AI authoring tool, year) so for example (Open AI Chat GPT, 2023).
Keep a copy of your conversation (your prompt and the response generated) with the AI tool. You can do this by taking a screenshot or cutting and pasting. Your teacher might ask you to include this copy as an appendix at the end of your assignment. Please check with them before you hand in your work.
